How to successfully sew a new lawn

Monday, August 9th, 2010

There are two ways in which a new lawn can successfully be sawn: it can either be grown from seed, or it can be laid out in turf-strips of already grown grass.

The decision is mainly one of cost versus convenience – while seeding is altogether cheaper, the strips of turf are easier to lay out and obviously more satisfying to look at, if one wants an impressive garden right from the onset.

In any case one should be choosing the time of year for sewing carefully.
Definitely the best time is spring or early to mid-autumn. A few utensils ate necessary to be optimally prepared, apart from the lawn or the seed itself, obviously. There should always be enough water nearby, best coming directly from a tap or sprinkler. Also useful are a yardstick, a garden rake, string and stakes. When it comes to fertilizer, the opinions vary: some prefer it without, some won’t take the chance. That’s really up to ones own perspective on landscaping.

One starts by digging the ground. It is crucial to get rid of all weeds, in particular of their roots, as they will hinder the newly growing grass to flourish. The soil level needs to be well raked and evenly broken up before it is levelled with the yardstick. Using the garden rake, lines are being marked in the soil. Then, the soil needs to rest, at least for a week, before it again is treaded to eliminate the last air pockets. One does this by working ones feet over the soil in all directions.

Now the soil should show off an evenly crumbled surface, which needs to be raked over once more. Under best circumstances, and if time is not an issue, one should now wait again for the leftover weed to germinate for around two weeks, after which it can be weeded off for good.

The most structured method is then to divide the field by using the string and the stakes. The easiest is to mark strips that are about a yard wide, in which the seed is now sown. Each type of grass behaves differently; here, the instructions on the package are to be followed. The seed should be scattered evenly, with a soft, repetitive motion of the hand. If one decided in favour of fertilizer, this is the time to apply it according to directions. The watering directly after the seeding and in the following days is also dependent on the type of grass used. In any case though, the areas are to be kept moist for at least six to eight weeks.
