A lot of discussions concerning the future of atomic energy in the supply of the increasing energy needs in Germany but also worldwide are going on since years. On the one hand there are the so-called ecological minded-troops who favor a rapid change to renewable energy sources while on the other hand there are those more or less industry minded supporters of an indisputable need for energy from atomic plants.

If we, however, take a closer look on what is currently going on worldwide, we will, beyond any preference for any of the two sides, find that the number of atomic plants is on the rise. And we are not talking about just a few here and there, on the contrary, especially the most energy demanding nations on this planet have already decided that without atomic energy they will not be able to secure their future energy needs and thus the development of their particular economies. Particularly China is planning to increase the number of its atomic plants by a two digit value and, as we have just learned, the U.S. is following. For the first time after the disaster at Harrisburg, new atomic plants are in the planning which clearly is an indication that the U.S. is not willing to step behind China or even becoming more dependent on future energy sources from the outside maybe even from China.

This answers to a great extent already the question whether atomic energy will have a future on this planet because it goes without saying that still atomic energy is from an economical point of view, at least if we consider only the direct costs of generating energy, much favorable then any of the renewable energy sources currently available. This means, however, that in order to remain economically competitive nobody really can abandon the use of atomic energy in the future although especially in Europe there seems to be a general believe that atomic energy is an out fashioned model for energy supply. Future will teach us more about this and hopefully we will learn the lesson in time.

Whether we like it or not – energy derived from renewable sources will for many more years to come not be able to satisfy the needs for the increasing energy demands of the nations not to mention even the costs involved with these. Thus, in order to guarantee also in future a sustainable economical growth and thereby a better living of the population the use of atomic energy will be indispensable.
