Radioactivity a brief insight definition introduction term radioactivity

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Radioactivity is the commonly used expression referring to the scientifically more correct term of radioactive decay. It describes ionising particles or radiation emitted from instable nuclei, whether it is a naturally emitting radioactive element like uranium or a radioactive isotope of a commonly stabile element. In fact there are found radioactive isotypes for every element: For instance contains water of a 10 to the power of minus 15 percent part of the radioactive hydrogen isotope tritium. Still, due to this very little percentage, water is not dangerous at all:

Radioactivity is actually used for medical purposes, following the principle of the right dosis for the right purpose. In fact, radioactivity is found everywhere as a form of natural background radiation, which actually plays a role in evolution: Due to a slight background radiation, there is cellular reformation occuring everywhere, all the time, leading to new forms of individuals – only a high overdosis will lead to harmful cellular overreaction like e. g. cancer. This is a question of radioecology.

Publish or Perish Still important today

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

To what extent does this phrase still describe the contemporary circumstances of publication in the academic world? The phrase “Publish or Perish” derives from a long chain of tradition in the US American academic field, in which it was used as a slogan to signify that the number of publications serves as the key to success of any academic.

Today more than ever this slogan happens to undergo a revival: In times of globalization the market of publication is forced to face a flood of new-coming academics, who are all eager to sustain a certain academic position and for that to publish their articles in highly recommended magazines or scientific journals. As long as those recommended journals publish their articles frequently, scientists can be sure to be perceived in the academic discourse. (more…)

The Secrets of Online Publishing for Scientists

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Fast and efficient
Today the internet is the perfect medium for scientists to win a wider audience for their work by publishing their papers online. The advantages of online publication in comparison to traditional print publication are manifold. For once, the submitted text can be accessed worlwide by anyone anytime. Online publication is non-exclusive, which means that the text can still be marketed and sold otherwise. Various modes to search the text for central data, key words or results are possible with online publications. Especially in the world of natural science where results need to be updated continuously, the speed of online publication is a plus, too. Another interesting fact is that it is possible to include 3D-graphics, sounds or animations into the online text, a possibility printed scientific texts do not offer. The submitted text reaches, if placed on the right site, a professional academic circle which enables the author to participate in the scientific discussion of his or her field. Even students who have not published any work yet, can take part and submit papers.

Finding the right place to publish
Texts can be published in e-journals, e-book-form or other formats. The portals all give detailed instruction on how to use their services. Most portals are not specialised concerning their subject matter. There are websites that cover special areas like natural science or health science, though. The right portal will be the one which is linked to the right websites and therefore will be found by the right readers. The selection of the right portal may also depend on the country the scientist works in. Most sites are national sites, often university websites. Then there is the question of publication fees. Most university sites are free. Whereas commercial sites sometimes charge fees for their services.

The List
Here is a selection of portals offering the online publication of scientific texts:

Zukunft Photovoltaik in Deutschland

Friday, February 19th, 2010
